While Martin Margiela was still at the helm of Maison Margiela in the late 90’s and early 2000’s expansion happened rapidly. The Margiela company’s first settlement in Japan was in 2000 in the Ebisu district of Tokyo in joint venture with Kokonoe Corp ltd. Several years later they decided it was time for expansion, so they opened a storefront in the Omotesando district in Shibuya, Tokyo on November 1st, 2007. Martin Margiela is known for his tendency to favor supplementary collectables over plain traditional invitations to his collections or showings, and in the spirit of the Japanese tradition of gift giving (Temiyage) he carried over this practice to an opening gift. A supply of 100 limited edition official Rubik’s cubes designed by Martin himself were given out to customers as a gift on opening day. He chose to design them using his signature palette of spare white, with typewriter style typography plainly embellishing the front and white drawstring satchel.
